Red Tuesday: Why tomorrow is the most popular day of the year to get dumped

The key findings

* Nearly half of Valentine’s break-ups happen on ‘Red Tuesday’, with 49% choosing the day to end things before romance (and spending) kicks in.

* Money, guilt and emotional burnout are driving the split, as 41% dump partners to avoid Valentine’s costs and 38% admit they’re tired of faking affection.

* Most break-ups aren’t impulsive – over 80% had been planning it for days or longer, with after-work dumps the most common timing.

* Study conducted by IllicitEncounters.com, the UK’s largest extramarital dating site

Tomorrow marks Red Tuesday – the day Brits are statistically most likely to call time on their relationship as Valentine’s Day looms.

New research from IllicitEncounters.com, the UK’s largest extramarital dating site, reveals that the Tuesday before Valentine’s Day (10th February) is the single most popular day of the year to get dumped, as thousands of Brits perform a last-minute romantic U-turn to avoid the most amorous day of the year.

A poll of 1,500 members found that more than a third (34%) admit they have ended a relationship in the run-up to Valentine’s Day. Of those, almost half (49%) said they deliberately chose Red Tuesday to do it, making it the single most popular dumping day of the year.

So why are so many couples calling it quits just days before the most romantic date on the calendar?

Money plays a major role. Over two-fifths (41%) said they broke up to avoid the expense of Valentine’s Day altogether, admitting they didn’t want to splash out on gifts, meals or experiences for a relationship they knew wasn’t going anywhere.

Emotional honesty also came into play. 38% said they were tired of pretending everything was fine, while 29% admitted they no longer wanted to fake affection for the sake of one more “romantic” day.

Others saw Valentine’s Day as a line in the sand. Nearly a quarter (24%) said they wanted a clean slate before spring, while 19% confessed that guilt over seeing someone else pushed them to finally end things.

Timing, it seems, is everything – even when it comes to breakups. The poll found that most Red Tuesday splits happen at the end of the working day, with 37% ending things after work. Mornings accounted for 26% of breakups, while 21% happened at lunchtime. Just 16% waited until late at night, suggesting fewer people want to lie awake stewing after delivering bad news.

For many, deciding to call it quits wasn’t exactly spontaneous. Only 18% said they made the decision to end their relationship on that very day. A third (34%) had been planning it for a few days, 27% had sat on the decision for a week, and 21% admitted they’d been thinking about breaking up for much longer.

One member, Sarah*, 35, from Manchester, says Red Tuesday gave her the push she needed. “I knew by January that the relationship was over, but Valentine’s Day hanging over us made it feel urgent,” she says. “I didn’t want to sit through a forced dinner pretending we were happy. Ending it before felt brutal, but also like a relief.”

Expert comment from Jessica Leoni

Jessica Leoni, sex and relationships expert at IllicitEncounters.com, says Red Tuesday is all about timing and avoidance. “Valentine’s Day puts a spotlight on relationships, and not everyone likes what it shows,” she explains. “For many people, it forces a moment of honesty they’ve been avoiding.”

She adds: “There’s also a very practical side to it. People don’t want to spend money, make grand gestures or post loved-up photos when they know their heart isn’t in it. Red Tuesday becomes the moment they rip the plaster off and move on – even if it’s uncomfortable.”

Leoni says the surge in breakups shouldn’t come as a surprise. “Valentine’s Day is about commitment and affection. If a relationship is already on shaky ground, that pressure can be the final straw.”

Tomorrow is the day people are most likely to break up with their partner

The key findings

* Red Tuesday, which falls on the Tuesday before Valentine’s Day, is the most popular day of the year for breakups.

* 31% of people break up to avoid the pressure of Valentine’s Day expectations.

* Of the 36% of people who ended a relationship in the week leading up to Valentine’s Day, men are more likely to do so on Red Tuesday (62%) compared to women (38%), with millennials (ages 28-43) being the most likely to call it quits (40%).

* Study conducted byIllicitEncounters.com, the UK’s largest extramarital dating site.

If you’re in a shaky relationship, tomorrow might not be your lucky day. The Tuesday before Valentine’s Day – dubbed Red Tuesday – is the most popular day of the year for breakups, and it has become a notorious time for couples deciding to call it quits.

A recent poll conducted by the UK’s largest extramarital dating site, IllicitEncounters.com surveyed 1,200 people and found that 36% of respondents have ended a relationship in the week leading up to Valentine’s Day – of those, 66% broke up with their partner on Red Tuesday.

The reasons vary, but the most common one – cited by 31% of participants – is wanting to avoid the pressure of Valentine’s Day expectations. For many, the thought of planning a romantic evening or buying a meaningful gift for a partner they no longer see a future with is enough to push them to end things beforehand.

Meanwhile, 27% admitted they wanted to avoid the guilt of faking affection on the most romantic day of the year.

As for how people chose to deliver the bad news, 33% preferred to break up over the phone, while 29% opted for a text message. Surprisingly, only 26% ended things face-to-face, and a small percentage turned to social media (7%) or email (4%) to cut ties. A cold-hearted 1% admitted to ghosting their partner entirely.

Interestingly, the survey also revealed that 75% of people having an affair still choose to spend Valentine’s Day with their primary partner. However, 18% said they will prioritise spending time with their lover over their spouse, while 7% plan to skip celebrating altogether.

The poll found that men are more likely to initiate Red Tuesday breakups, accounting for 62% of them, while women make up 38%.

When it comes to age groups, Millennials (ages 28-43) are the most likely to call it quits on this day, representing 40% of breakups, followed by Gen Z (18-27) at 34%. Gen X (44-59) accounts for 18%, and Baby Boomers (60-78) make up just 8% of those ending relationships on Red Tuesday.

Expert comment from Jessica Leoni

Jessica Leoni, a sex and relationships expert at IllicitEncounters.com which conducted the poll explains the trend, “Red Tuesday breakups happen because people don’t want to fake their feelings on Valentine’s Day. Rather than go through the motions of romance, they’d prefer to be honest – even if it means heartbreak.

It’s also a time when people reflect on their relationship and decide if they truly see a future together. Some feel trapped by Valentine’s Day and the expectations that come with it, and rather than putting in effort for a relationship they don’t see lasting, they cut ties instead.

Ultimately, Red Tuesday has become a day of reckoning for many couples, and it’s no surprise that we see a massive spike in breakups right before Valentine’s Day.”

Red Tuesday: You’re more likely to be dumped today than any other time of the year, expert warns

The key findings

* The Tuesday before Valentine’s Day is the most popular time for people to get dumped.
* 37% of people revealed they’ve dumped their partner in the week leading up to Valentine’s Day.
* Of those, 52% admitted to ditching their partner on the Tuesday before Valentine’s Day, also known as ‘Red Tuesday’.
* The go-to method for breaking up is via WhatsApp messages (33%), followed by face-to-face dumping (21%) and breaking the news on a phone call (17%).
* Study conducted by IllicitEncounters.com, the UK’s largest extramarital dating site.

With Valentine’s Day just around the corner, it’s usually a time filled with romance and anticipation for couples. You might be expecting a fancy gift or dinner at a snazzy restaurant, but actually, new research reveals that you could fall victim to ‘Red Tuesday’ instead.

Today is the day that people are most likely to be dumped. Yes, really.

According to a survey by IllicitEncounters.com, the UK’s largest extramarital dating site, the Tuesday before Valentine’s Day, known as ‘Red Tuesday’, could see your relationship crashing down just before the most romantic day of the year.

The website polled 1,500 of its members, and incredibly, 37% admitted to breaking up with their partner in the run up to Valentine’s Day.

Of those, a whopping 52% said they dumped their other half on ‘Red Tuesday’.

45% revealed that they dumped their partner in the week leading up to the most romantic day of the year, and 5% had the guts to end their relationship on Valentine’s Day itself!

So, what’s the most popular method when it comes to throwing in the towel? 33% of people went down the WhatsApp message route, whilst 21% mustered up the courage to break the bad news face-to-face. 8% didn’t even bother letting their partner know the relationship was over, and simply ghosted them – ouch!

Expert comment from Jessica Leoni

Jessica Leoni, sex and relationships expert and spokesperson at IllicitEncounters.com, commented on the ‘Red Tuesday’ phenomenon, saying, “It’s a bit of a “V-Day pressure cooker” situation. As we get closer to the day of romance and roses, there’s this expectation to have this epic, Instagram-worthy love story. Suddenly, people find themselves questioning if their current relationship is measuring up to the grand gestures they see all over social media.

And let’s not forget the gift-giving stress that comes with celebrating Valentine’s Day. If one person is expecting a romantic masterpiece and ends up with a last-minute box of chocolates, it can lead to some serious disappointment.”

Leoni even suggested that people don’t give into the hype of Valentine’s Day, saying “I actually recommend that couples AVOID celebrating Valentine’s Day if you really want your love to thrive. Don’t give in to the commercialisation of the day, because you’re just adding extra strain to relationships, especially if they’re already on unsteady ground.”

Expert comment from Jessica Leoni

Jessica Leoni, sex and relationships expert at IllicitEncounters.com, said ‘Love is in the air! But not for everyone. The lead-up to Valentine’s day can be tense – it’s likely we’ve all either dumped or been dumped this week in the past so a little anxiety today is only natural. It’s better to pull that band-aid quickly than delay hurting someone. You’ve got to be cruel to be kind. As many of us revel in the romance of the week ahead, spare a thought for the hordes of people mending broken hearts today.’

Beware of Red Tuesday – top day of the year to be dumped is today

The key findings

* The Tuesday before Valentine’s day is the day you’re most likely to get dumped – compared to any other day of the year!
* 36% of people have broken up with their partner in the week leading up to Valentine’s Day
* 2 out of 3 of those broke up with their partner on Red Tuesda

It’s the week of love, but not for everyone.

Beware, as Red Tuesday, only six days before Valentine’s day – is the day you’re most likely to get dumped! As if this year couldn’t get any worse.

36% of people have broken up with their significant other in the week leading up to Valentine’s day. A staggering 2 out of 3 of those have ditched their partners on Red Tuesday (67%).

Results come from a new survey of 2000 members of IllicitEncounters.com, the UK’s leading dating website for married people.

A further 28% ended things in the week leading up to the big day.

5% actually called it quits on Valentines day itself – savage.

Whilst some of us are preparing gifts and declarations of love – others are scheming on how to escape their relationships.

The most popular way to throw in the towel was by text message 32%, followed by a phone call 24%.

Only 20% of people broke the news to their partners in person.

A whopping 16% ditch their partner via social media, turns out you only really need 140 characters to break someone’s heart.

6% of people didn’t even deliver the news themselves. Opting instead to get a friend or relative to do it on their behalf – don’t shoot the messenger.

Best to avoid the postman today, as a shocking 2% send a letter to break the news that they no longer want to be together.

Covid-19 is going to make this year’s Red Tuesday that much worse, with stay at home orders, couples who live together will struggle to move on.

No doubt the pandemic has had an impact on many relationship breakdowns in the course of the last year, with a previous poll of 1500 married affair-seekers, indicating 82% agree their relationship with their spouse has suffered due to the covid restrictions.*

Expert comment from Jessica Leoni

Jessica Leoni, sex and relationships expert at IllicitEncounters.com, said ‘Ohh, he did you dirty girl! What a way to seal the deal.

As many of us revel in the romance of the week ahead, today tons of people are going to be trying to mend their broken hearts, giving a whole new meaning to lovesick.

Sometimes you’ve got to be cruel to be kind. If people are dishing out break-ups just before Valentines day, it’s best to leave the table gracefully.

Red Tuesday is spurred on by guilt, fear, and perhaps a little pity for the other half. If you’re not quite as loved up as you think you should be, leading up to the most romantic day of the year, then there’s no surprise why you might want to cut ties.

My advice to the jilted lovers, don’t be too hard on yourself. Valentines day puts a lot of pressure on couples, and if your relationship is already on the rocks, V-day is only going to rock the boat.”

Beware of Red Tuesday – top day of the year to be dumped is tomorrow (Tues, Feb 12th)

The key findings

  • More couples split up in the week of Valentine’s than any other week of the year;
  • Peak day for dumping is 48 hours before the big day;
  • Most popular way to end a relationship is by text, followed by a phone call and personal chat;
  • Results are from a new survey of 2,000 people by IllicitEncounters.com, the UK’s leading dating site for married people

Beware of Red Tuesday (February 12) tomorrow – it is the top day of the year to be dumped, according to new research.

What the numbers show

More couples split up in the week of Valentine’s than any other week of the year.

And the peak day for dumping is 48 hours before the big day.

More than a third of people surveyed (37%) said they had broken with a lover in the week before Valentine’s.

The vast majority of people prefer to end a relationship without meeting their estranged partner face-to-face.

The most popular way to dump someone is by text, chosen by 31% of respondents, followed by a phone call (28%), in person (27%), over Facebook (8%), by Whatsapp (4%) and over Twitter (2%).

The results are from a new survey of 2,000 people by IllicitEncounters.com, the UK’s leading dating site for married people.

It found that while Red Tuesday was the most popular day for dumping, it was also one of the peak days to see an illicit lover ahead of Valentine’s.

Eight out of ten people (78%) having an affair with IllicitEncounters.com still choose to spend Valentine’s Day with their regular partner.

Only 16% – one in six – will leave their regular partner in the lurch and go out for a date with their lover on February 14.

The preferred date nights for people having affairs ahead of Valentine’s were the three days before – with February 13 the most likely for an illicit date.

Those having an affair spend an average of £90 on a gift for their lover, compared to £50 on the gift for their partner – 80% more for the mistress.

The reason there are so many break-ups in the most romantic week of the year is that February 14 focuses people’s minds on whether their relationship is really working.

It is easier to call it quits ahead of Valentine’s – saving a money on a gift and also not having to make false declarations of love.

Expert comment from Jessica Leoni

IllicitEncounters.com spokesman Christian Grant said: “The period between Christmas and February is a popular time for people to spring clean their love lives as well as their homes.

“This period of reflection reaches its peak in the week before Valentine’s when there are more break-ups than at any other time of the year.

“For lots of people, it is easier to call time on a relationship rather than pretend everything is fine and tell lots of white lies.

“Dumping someone electronically is rising in popular with three-quarters of people breaking up with someone over the phone rather than in person.

“Everyone will have seen unhappy couples pretending that they enjoying each other’s company on dinner dates on Valentine’s Day.

“What’s more interesting is looking at the body language of couples out on February 11, 12 or 13 – they are likely to be having a lot more fun while having an affair, celebrating Valentine’s together a few days early before returning to their partners.”

More than one million people have registered with IllicitEncounters.com since the site was started more than ten years ago.

It is enjoying a bumper start to 2019 with registrations up 25% in the first six weeks, as increasing numbers of unhappy spouses act on their New Year’s Resolution to shake up their relationship by starting an affair.

‘Red Tuesday’ Is the Most Popular Day of the Year to Get Dumped – Just One Week Before Valentine’s Day!

  • Tuesday 7th February, Red Tuesday, is the most popular day of the year to get dumped
  • 30% of a survey of 1,500 members of IllicitEncounters.com, the UK’s leading dating website for married people, have broken up with their partner just one week before Valentine’s Day
  • 80% said that they no longer loved their partner, with 57% fearing the dreaded proposal
  • And in terms of the method of the break-up, the majority (55%) broke up face-to-face…
  • ….but 5% proved that you only need 140 characters to break someone’s heart, killing it off on social media

While many couples are planning to walk off lovingly into the sunset this Valentine’s Day, some are contemplating how they’re going to deliver the killer blow to their significant other.

That’s because Tuesday 7th February is Red Tuesday, the most popular day of the year to get dumped… and it falls just one week before Valentine’s Day.

IllicitEncounters.com, the UK’s leading dating website for married people and the leading authority on infidelity, surveyed over 1,500 of their members, with as many as 30% stating that they’ve broken up with their partner a week before Valentine’s Day.

The reasons for the unfortunate timing? Well, the significant majority (80%) simply stated that they no longer loved their significant other, and felt too guilty to spend a day full of love and romance with them, knowing that they couldn’t reciprocate those feelings.

And of that 80%, over half (57%) said that they feared receiving – or felt pressured into making – a proposal that they weren’t ready for.

“It’s done out of a combination of fear, pity and guilt,” explains the site’s spokesperson, Christian Grant.

“Many find themselves in a relationship that they know has been heading off a cliff for some time, but they’re too scared to step out their comfort zone.

“However, the guilt can’t help but consume them as the pressures of Valentine’s Day become too much.

“The shame and general all-round awkwardness of having to profess your love to someone that you, well, don’t really love, is a dreaded realisation that many only open their eyes to at the very last moment.

“Add to that the fear of having to make – or receive – a proposal, and many will gladly choose the lesser of the two evils and hammer the final nail in the coffin before the situation gets any worse.”

And for those that do let their partner down this Red Tuesday, 55% elect to do so face-to-face.

However, that leaves 28% who could only muster the courage to end things over the phone, with 12% breaking up via text and instant messaging (presumably with a lot of sad emojis), with the remaining 5% proving that you only need 140 characters to break someone’s heart; they killed it off on social media.

Red Tuesday: Tuesday Before V-Day Is the Most Popular Day of the Year to Dump Someone!

92946-dealing-with-a-break-up-full

Make sure to hold on to the receipts for those expensive Valentine’s Day gifts because on 9th February, there’s a good chance you’re getting dumped. That’s according to IllicitEncounters.com, the UK’s leading dating website for married people, who have dubbed 9th February as Red Tuesday, the top dumping day of the year.

IllicitEncounters.com surveyed over 2000 of their members, with 27% admitting to have broken up with someone in the week leading up to Valentine’s Day. Why so close to Valentine’s Day? Spokesperson for IllicitEncounters.com, Christian Grant, explains:

“You’re on the cusp of what is generally considered to be one of the most romantic and important days for any relationship, and then you realise that you don’t love your partner as much as they love you, so to save yourself the embarrassment or shame of having to declare your love to someone you don’t really care for, what do you do? You take the lesser of two evils and dump them.”

IllicitEncounters.com’s survey also found the ways in which people have previously dumped their partners on Red Tuesday, with the majority (26%) choosing to break the news by text. 24% braved a face-to-face conversation with their now ex-partner, with 22% dumping their partner by phone.

Interestingly, the number of people who dumped their partner via instant messaging services such as WhatsApp, and social media networks like Facebook and Twitter, increased from last year, with 13% choosing to break up over Facebook, 10% over WhatsApp, and 7% breaking the news to their partner in a lowly 140 characters on Twitter. Ouch.

Grant explains: It’s not an easy thing to do [breaking up with someone] especially given the timing, so many people opt for the easiest option available, which is evidently anything that avoids face-to-face contact.”

Interestingly, IllicitEncounters.com has reported a record number of members signing up to the site in the lead up to Valentine’s Day.

“It’s not the first time that this has happened,” explains Grant. “For the thousands of people who break up, there are many who choose not to do so. Whether that’s out of fear, or whether they’ve already paid out on an expensive weekend away in Paris, they simply grit and bear it… but that never lasts for too long.

No one is going to sit around do nothing if they’re in an unhappy relationship, and sites like IllicitEncounters.com are evidently a popular alternative for those who don’t dump their partner this Red Tuesday.”

Boom in Mistress Cards as Valentine’s Day Approaches!

ne2dxtseqqfyvjtum3la

IllicitEncounters.com has added a range of Valentine’s Cards to their successful series of Mistress Cards celebrating ADULTERY. The new range of Mistress Cards launched by the UK’s largest married dating site ahead of Valentine’s Day has instantly become an unlikely bestseller, with 2.6 being sold every minute.

E-cards can be sent by email for free from Mistresscards.com or printed versions of the cards cost £2.50 and can be ordered online. Most of the cards are aimed at men although others are aimed at married women to send to their lovers – or Histresses. The decision to launch the range came after a survey found married men spend 23% more on Valentine’s gifts for their mistresses than their wives.

The poll, which surveyed 2,000 IE male members, found married men spent an average of £147.60 on Valentine’s gifts for their lovers compared to just £120 on their spouse. Mistress gifts were also more likely to be more sensual, like lingerie, champagne or chocolates, compared to practical gifts for their wives, like a phone upgrade or a new purse.

The best-selling Mistress card says:

Roses are red, Violets are Blue, It’s a good thing my wife doesn’t know I’m screwing you

The second best-selling card says:

‘I want you as my mistress to brighten up my life,

Please overlook that I have a wife.

My relationship’s ending, some would say dead

So let’s have some dinner and end up in bed.’

The cards can be sent from any email address and arrive to the recipient immediately.

“What we’re seeing in this product popularity is how much men value their mistresses,” said psychologist Lucy Redford, “Receiving a card for Valentine’s Day can mean a lot to a mistress, someone who is stereotypically seen as the second most important, after the wife. It’s really a small thing that means something huge – that they’re important. It validates them and makes them think they’re on their lover’s mind. Fundamentally, that’s what we all crave – to feel important and validated.”

“We are absolutely delighted with sales figures.” Claire Page, spokesperson for IllicitEncounters.com said, “We launched the cards Monday morning at 9am and by Tuesday morning, we had sales of over 3,600. There’s 1440 minutes in a day, so that means there are 2.6 sold every minute. I am not surprised in the slightest that the cards have been such a hit – they’re proof of how much men on our site treasure their mistresses. One woman sent an email to me this morning and said she had received a mistress card from her lover along with a beautiful Tiffany necklace! A lot of men value their relationship with their mistress more than their marriage but for some reason or another –financial, family, personal or health – they cannot leave the marriage. Our mistresses love being treated like this, it’s really the best of both worlds: receiving all the excitement of being spoilt and treated like a princess, without the hassle of a relationship.”
