2017 Was The Biggest Ever Year for Affairs

  • 2017 was the biggest ever year for affairs, and 2018 is set to eclipse it
  • IllicitEncounters.com, the UK’s leading dating website for married people saw its busiest and most popular year ever, making 2017 the biggest year on record for adultery
  • Over 120,000 people joined the site, 54% of those being women
  • The most popular age range for women was 31 – 40; 41 – 50 for men
  • With a further 150,000 people projected to sign up to the site this year, you’re more likely to be cheated on in 2018 than ever before

For many, 2017 will live long in the memory for all the wrong reasons, and now new research has only added further fuel to the fire.

IllicitEncounters.com, the UK’s leading dating website for married people and the leading authority on infidelity, saw its busiest and most popular year since its inception in 2004, making 2017 the biggest year on record for adultery.

Over 120,000 people joined the site, a year-on-year increase of just under 17,000.

Most notably, women took the march last year, making up 54% of all new members.

There was also an increase in the amount of younger women joining the site, with 25% of all women falling into the 21-30 age category.

The majority (31%) were 31 – 40, while 22% were between the ages of  41 – 50.

A similar trend was seen among men, with 26% being between the ages of 21 – 30. The majority were slightly older than women, however, with 35% ranging between 41 – 50 years old.

30% were 31 – 40 years old, and 18% were 51 – 60.

With an increase in the amount of adulterers for two years running, the site expects 2018 to be no different, with a further 150,000 people projected to sign up to the site this year. That means you’re more likely to be cheated on in 2018 than any other year.

And if you’re dating a man between the ages of 41 – 50 or a woman between 31 – 40, then you’re officially in the danger zone and more likely to be cheated on than anyone else.

The site’s spokesperson, Christian Grant, explains the significance of the findings:

“The two biggest takeaways are that the average age of adulterers seem to getting younger each younger, and the ratio of men and women is edging quickly towards the latter.

“We can deduce that more and more people are rushing into marriage prematurely. Whether that’s because they want to keep up with the Jones’, financial reasons, or something else entirely, is difficult to say.

“With regards to the sharp increase in female adulterers, we can confidently say that the idea of the 21st century woman is the driving force behind this increase.

“Women are more financially secure and less dependent on men than ever before, and they’re more likely to go out and get what they want.

“Evidently, that includes a tumultuous affair.”

If Your Partner Spent Big This Christmas, They Could Be Cheating On You

  • IllicitEncounters.com, the UK’s leading dating website for married people can reveal the Christmas gifts that indicate that your partner might be having an affair
  • 85% of men and 89% of women stated that they spent lavishly on their partner because they felt guilty
  • The site surveyed 300 married men and 300 married women to find out the most popular gifts they bought for their partner this Christmas
  • 35% of men spoiled their wife with designer jewellery, and 27% with designer clothing
  • Women bought their husbands designer clothing (24%) and gadgets (20%) such as Smart Watches and Smart Speakers

While your face might have lit up on Christmas morning when you opened the bracelet from Tiffany’s or the Givenchy bag, it could be also sign that your partner is having an affair.

IllicitEncounters.com, the UK’s leading dating website for married people and the leading authority on infidelity, can reveal the Christmas gifts that indicate that your partner might be having an affair.

The site surveyed 300 married men and 300 married women to find out the most popular gifts they bought for their partner this Christmas.

35% of men spoiled their wife with designer jewellery, with 27% hedging their bets on designer clothing.

Spending on designer goods didn’t stop there, with a further 20% spending big on a designer handbag.

The remaining 18% purchased anything ranging from spa days to shoes.

Women, on the other hand, predominantly bought their husbands designer clothing (24%).

20% went down the tech route, with Smart Watches and Smart Speakers such as the Amazon Echo or Google Home proving a popular gift of choice.

16% decided that a way to a man’s heart was through his stomach, and splashed out on expensive liquor, while 13% purchased came to the realisation that a man is nothing without his beard – they spent big on grooming products.

Critically, where both men and women agreed was on the motivations behind their high-end purchases.

A whopping 85% of men and 89% of women stated that they spent lavishly on their partner this Christmas purely out of guilt for their affair.

The site’s spokesperson, Christian Grant, explains:

“As you get older, and as you spend more and more time in the same relationship, Christmas becomes less about the gifts themselves and more about the act of giving.

“That’s why expensive and lavish gifts might not be a cause of celebration as you’d initially think.

“From the experienced adulterer to the first-timer, there’s an element of guilt, however small, that’s absolutely unavoidable.

“One small way to alleviate that guilt is to shower your significant other with material goods that you wouldn’t otherwise buy them.

“Money can’t buy happiness, but maybe it can buy you some peace of mind until you come to terms with your relationship status.”

Over One In Five Married People Had An Affair With A Colleague At The Christmas Party

  • Over one in five married people admitted to cheating at the work Christmas party
  • 30% kissed a co-worker or manager, while 10% slept with them
  • 18% got drunk and insulted their co-worker or boss
  • The results come from a survey of over 300 married people on IllicitEncounters.com, the UK’s leading dating website for married people

Employees across the country are hoping that what happens at the work Christmas party stays at the work Christmas party. That’s because IllicitEncounters.com, the UK’s leading dating website for married people and the leading authority on infidelity, can reveal that over one in five married people admitted to cheating with someone from work at their Christmas party.

In a survey of over 300 married people who frequent the site, 22% admitted to cheating in some form with a co-worker. Of that 22%, a massive 50% inappropriately flirted with a colleague, 10% seductively danced with them and 30% kissed them

The remaining 10% went the whole way, having slept with someone from work.

While there are those who didn’t give in to temptation, they’ll still be hoping their colleagues have short memories, as 18% got drunk and insulted their co-workers or boss and a further 35% embarrassed themselves with a show of bad karaoke and ‘dad dancing’.

The site’s spokesperson, Christian Grant, expands:

“Another year, another Christmas party, another series of inappropriate work-based affairs.

“There are no great surprises here. Affairs between colleagues are some of the most common, and the Christmas party removes the boundaries that would normally keep two colleagues from acting upon their feelings.

“Make no mistake, unlike some affairs, this is purely driven by lust. You’re lying to yourself if you’ve not mentally ranked your colleagues in order of attractiveness – we all have – but these adulterers are the ones who take it that one step further.

“Unfortunately, the long-term effects of bedding your colleague can be pretty damaging. You’ll have to face your colleague, or your boss, when you return to work, and there’s no way that situation can be anything other than incredibly awkward for everyone involved.

“Our advice? Make sure your thoughts about your colleagues remain as just thoughts, and save the affair for a situation that won’t ruin your career.”

Adulterous Behaviour Could Reach Record High As the UK Begins to Freeze

  • The heavy snow is leading to a huge increase in the amount of people seeking affairs
  • IllicitEncounters.com, the UK’s leading dating website for married people, has seen a 45% week-on-week increase in the number of people signing up to the site as a result of the snow
  • The surge in subscriptions are most evident in parts of the country where the snow has hit hardest, such as the East Midlands, Wales and the South West
  • With the snow trapping many indoors, the cracks in their marriage begin to show
  • The site has taken on new staff to try and keep up with the increased demand
  • The most popular counties include Oxfordshire, Warwickshire and Gloucestershire, while Birmingham is the city that has seen the biggest surge

As large parts of the country experience heavy snowfall, an unexpected side effect has been the alarming rise in unhappy husbands and wives racing to married-dating websites in search of an affair. With the cold weather set to continue, how many marriages will have survived when the snow thaws?

IllicitEncounters.com, the UK’s leading dating website for married people and the leading authority on infidelity, has seen a significant surge in subscriptions coinciding with the harsh winter that’s trapping the nation indoors.

The surge in subscriptions were most evident in parts of the country where the snow has hit hardest, with users in the East Midlands, Wales and the South West seeing as much as a 30% week-on-week increase in the number of people signing up to the site.

Taking everyone into account, the site has seen a 45% week-on-week increase in the number of people signing up from across the country, and that site has responded in kind, with extra staff hired and existing staff working overtime to keep up with demand.

The most popular counties include Oxfordshire, Warwickshire and Gloucestershire, while Birmingham is the city that has seen the biggest surge in members.

London, normally free of any significant snowfall, has also seen a 15% week-on-week increase in subscriptions, with the boroughs of Haringey and Tower Hamlets seeing the biggest surge.

IllicitEncounters.com’s spokesperson, Christian Grant, explains:

“After you’ve got a couple of hours of enjoyment playing around in the snow, the reality of being housebound with your partner kicks in; after just a few days, couples experience cabin fever. When a marriage is fractured, time away from your partner prevents the cracks from turning into chasms. But when you’re trapped indoors, instead of kicking your feet up and nestling in front of a cosy fireplace, many instead descend into arguments, and it doesn’t take very long for those arguments to spiral.

“It’s no coincidence to see so many people signing up to Illicit Encounters, then, especially those from areas that have been most affected by the snow. In fact, this isn’t the first occurrence of snow-led infidelity, which is why we have been able to prepare and quickly respond with additional staff members to cope with the increased demand.

“Although Christmas is only right around the corner, it seems as if there’s plenty of time for a few people to get themselves on the naughty list.”

Emergency services workers are most likely to cheat this Christmas

  • If your partner works for one of the emergency services this Christmas, then they’re more likely to cheat
  • IllicitEncounters.com, the UK’s leading dating website for married people saw a 65% month-on-month increase in the amount of emergency services workers signing up
  • The total number of said employees on the site stands at 55,000
  • There was a 40% increase in activity among its emergency services workers, which includes more messages sent and more photos uploaded
  • 200 emergency services employees were surveyed, with 39% admitting to have engaged in a fling over Christmas in the past; 21% said they’ve had a fling with a colleague.

If your partner works for one of the emergency services this Christmas, then they’re more likely to cheat. IllicitEncounters.com, the UK’s leading dating website for married people and the leading authority on infidelity, can reveal a significant 65% month-on-month increase in the amount of emergency services workers signing up to the site.

It’s a tremendous increase, one that brings the total number of said employees on the site to just under 55,000.

The site also saw a 40% increase in activity among its emergency services workers, which includes more messages sent, more profiles edited and more photos uploaded.

With Christmas requiring more attention and dedication to family, adulterers typically find it very difficult to sneak away for a Christmas fling, but emergency services workers such as firemen or policemen, with their irregular work hours, have no such problem.

Their alibi is already set in stone. They can tell their partner they’re on call, and then sneak away for a salacious rendezvous with their mistress/histress.

This isn’t a new phenomenon. 200 emergency services employees were surveyed by the site, with 39% admitting to have engaged in a fling over Christmas in the past, with 21% stating that they had a fling with a colleague.

The site’s spokesperson, Christian Grant, explains:

“Tis the season to be jolly, except if you’re an adulterer. From nativity plays, to Christmas shopping, to spending unwanted time with the in-laws, juggling one relationship around the festive period is difficult enough, let alone two.

“However, the aforementioned emergency services workers find themselves in a unique position. Needless to say, while many don’t have an affair on the job, they can tell their partner that they’ve been summoned to work and are on call, sneak away for a couple of hours and the job’s done.”

Wealthy People Are More Likely to Cheat, Especially Men

  • IllicitEncounters.com, the UK’s leading dating website for married people, is home to over 60,000 executives and financial professionals
  • The site found that adulterers earn an average of £52,000 a year, after tax, with the amount of city professionals who’ve joined has risen by 8% year-on-year
  • 1% claimed to bring home earnings of £1 million or more each year; <1% stated they had assets worth into the tens of millions, indicating that certain captains of industry frequent the site
  • The site surveyed 600 of its members, with 29% stating that they work 60-hour weeks. 34%, work 40-hour weeks and 20% work a hefty 80-hour week
  • 45% have engaged in an affair with someone they work with

The jury’s out on whether money can buy happiness, but what’s certain is that it can’t buy a stable relationship.

IllicitEncounters.com, the UK’s leading dating website for married people and the leading authority on infidelity, can reveal that richer people are more likely to cheat.

The average member on the site earns an average of £52,000 per year, after tax, significantly higher than the national average. The site is already home to over 60,000 executives and financial professionals, 65% of which are men, while the amount of city professionals who’ve signed up has also risen by as much as 8% year-on-year.

A small amount of members, 1%, also claimed to bring home earnings of £1 million or more each year, while less than 1% stated that they had assets worth into the tens of millions and more, indicating, perhaps, that certain captains of industry reside on the dating website.

That would hardly come as a surprise however, with businessmen from the likes of CEO of Lloyd’s Bank Antonio Horta-Osorio to Donald Trump, to name just two, having notoriously engaged in illicit encounters of their own.

The site also surveyed 600 of its members, with as many as 29% stating that they worked 60-hour weeks. The majority, 34%, worked the standard 40-hour week, but as many as 20% work a hefty 80-hour week.

With so many hours spent at work, it’s time at home that’s sacrificed, with 73% of respondents saying that they spend less time with their partner since they assumed a senior role in their respective places of work.

Meanwhile, 66% state that they have less sex with their partner than they used to.

With time a scarce resource, juggling a second relationship can be difficult, which is why 45% have engaged in an affair with someone they work with.

The site’s spokesperson, Christian Grant, explains:

“Successful people are born workaholics. They live and breathe their careers, work incredibly long hours, and value their career above all else. That means that relationships with loved ones are at a premium.

“But, they’re still human. You still want a physical relationship, but coming home late to find your partner already asleep isn’t ideal, so a relationship with a colleague ensues.

“For those that do engage in a long-term affair, though, they can at least do so on their terms They don’t have to meet incredibly often, and when they do meet they can arrange the time and place to suit their respective work schedules. They don’t always necessarily have to deal with the emotional needs of each other, either, and it’s something that can be kept purely physical.

“It’s flexible, ideal, and it’s no surprise to see this demographic flood sites like Illicit Encounters.”

Over Half Of Adulterers Say An Affair Saved Their Marriage

  • 61% of married adulterers who engaged in a long-term affair claim that it saved their marriage
  • 17% said they were significantly less likely to divorce their partner
  • 13% said having an affair made them better lovers
  • 47% of married adulterers who engaged in a short-term affair claim that it saved their marriage

The results come from a survey of 200 married people on IllicitEncounters.com, the UK’s leading dating website for married people

While an affair can certainly cause complications in a marriage, IllicitEncounters.com, the UK’s leading dating website for married people and the leading authority on infidelity, found that in a lot of cases, it can actually save one.

100 married people who have engaged in at least one long-term affair (6 months or more) were surveyed, with 61% stating that having an affair saved their relationship, making their marriage stronger and happier.

13% said that having an affair made them better lovers.

Meanwhile, a further 17% went as for as to say that they were significantly less likely to divorce their partner, with their affair having filled the gaps in their existing relationship.

A further 100 people who had a short-term affair (less than 6 months) were also surveyed, with just under half (47%) stating that the affair saved their relationship. 10% felt like the affair made them better lovers, while 12% said they were less likely to file for divorce.

One of the biggest reasons behind an affair is a lack of intimacy in a relationship, whereby one partner loses their virility far quicker than the other. Naturally, that leads to friction, agitation and a far less happier relationship in almost every aspect. Elise was one of these women, so she joined Illicit Encounters for the attention and intimacy she was missing at home.

She says:

“My husband saw a side of me that had evaded him for a while. I was happier around the house, less agitated, friendlier and I was far more able to meet his emotional needs now that my physical ones were being met.”

The same applied to Dennis, who also joined Illicit Encounters following a regular but lacklustre sex life with his wife. After the affair began his relationship with his wife improved exponentially, as he became a more tolerant and attentive husband.

He says:

“The biggest positive was how much my marriage at home improved. My wife was still getting the intimacy that satisfied her, but at the same time, I felt like I became a better husband and lover. I know some people will frown upon what I’m doing, and I do understand, but I’m so much happier, and my wife is too, that the regret or guilt doesn’t weigh on me. I’m happy with the decision I’ve made.”

However, sometimes things aren’t always that simple. More often than not, an affair is a result of someone’s hand being forced, with all other options off the table. That’s what happened to Jane, who joined Illicit Encounters following her husband’s involvement in an accident that left him physically impaired.

She says:

“I love my husband in absolutely every way, but I felt compelled to join IE after he became paralysed following an accident several years ago.

“As you’d expect, that destroyed any intimacy between us, with anything physical becoming pretty much impossible. I found myself stuck between a rock and a hard place. This was still the kind, sweet and loving man I married, and he is still a great father to our children, but as a woman in my mid-40’s, am I supposed to be confined to a sexless life until the day I, or he, dies?

The site’s spokesperson, Christian Grant, comments:

“A common misconception is that an affair is black and white. If you cheat, you’re a bad person without reprieve, and conversely, if you don’t, your marriage is blissful and without issue. We know that’s absolutely not the case.

“People have an affair for a variety of different reasons and, contrary to popular belief, it’s not because they’re bad, greedy, or horrible people. They’ve often explored every avenue before they decide to have an affair. They’ve been through counselling, they’ve spoken to their partner, or in some cases, such as Jane’s, solving it is beyond their control.

“What we do know is that an affair doesn’t necessarily have to ruin a marriage, and it can sometimes save it. We can see the positive impact an affair can have, with up to 17% of our respondents willing to stay with their partner as a result – the positives that come with that are endless. Economic stability, their own happiness and general well-being, and not to mention the stable upbringing of their children are all invaluable benefits that can derive from that.”
The full stories of these adulterers are available below:

Elise – 41 – London

“My husband lost interest in sex when he hit his mid-40s, reducing our intimate lives to just birthdays and the occasional one-off here and there. I spoke to him about it, we went for counselling, but his stance didn’t change. With very few options left available to me, I joined Illicit Encounters with one thing in mind.

“Within a few weeks, I got speaking to a couple of men, and what followed was several months of sex that had sadly escaped from my marriage long ago.

“My husband was not only none the wiser, but he actually saw a side of me that had evaded him for a while. I was happier around the house, less agitated, friendlier and I was far more able to meet his emotional needs now that my physical ones were being met.

“In a strange way, my bond with my husband feels as strong as it’s ever been. I’m his rock – I always have been – but there’s no friction anymore, and I don’t feel like a burden now that I’m not having to ask him for something he clearly wasn’t willing to give me.”

Jane – 46 – Newcastle

“My story is a little different to what I’d imagine most people expect your average affair to be. I love my husband in absolutely every way, but I felt compelled to join IE after he became paralysed following an accident several years ago.

“My options were to either remain sexless for decades or have an affair. Neither option was particularly appealing, but I feel like I chose the lesser of two evils. My partner and I can raise our children continue to live as normal a life as possible, while I have my physical needs elsewhere. I appreciate that it’s an unorthodox solution to an unorthodox problem, but I truly feel like the affair has saved my marriage.”

Dennis – 39 – Sussex

“My sex life with my wife was never bad, but it was never great either. She was never willing to experiment in the bedroom or try new things, not to the extent that I was at least. While our sex life never dwindled, it lacked passion and romance – it was sex for the sake of sex’s sake, as if it was another part of the daily routine – you don’t even think twice about it.

With Unfaithful Friday representing the last affair of the year for many adulterers, most aren’t skimping on their destinations, and plan to go out in style.

Paris (17%) is the most popular destination, followed by Austria (15%), just in time for its famous Christmas markets.

The remainder of adulterers are mainly seeking retreats closer to home, with Yorkshire (14%), the Scottish Highlands (13%), Central London (11%), and the Peak District (7%) all proving popular.

The site’s spokesperson, Christian Grant, explains:

“Chestnuts roasting on an open fire. The thoughtful gift you appreciate but in your heart of hearts don’t honestly like. Stuffing your face full of turkey. It’s Christmas, and for an adulterer, that spells trouble.

“From Christmas shopping to nativity plays to seeing the in-laws, Christmas is undoubtedly the biggest stumbling block for anyone seeing their mistress or histress.

“That choke point leads to the inevitable: a premature year-ending romp to see out 2017 in style, albeit prematurely.

“So, if your partner is being coy about their plans this weekend, then it might be best to apply a bit of pressure to the wound and see what they’re really up to.”

Cat Owners Are Most Likely to Cheat, While Dog Owners are the Most Faithful

  • If you own a cat, you’re more likely to cheat, it’s been revealed
  • IllicitEncounters.com, the UK’s leading dating website for married people, surveyed 1,000 of their members, with 26% owning cats
  • The second most adulterous pet owners were home to rabbits (17%)
  • They were followed by reptile owners (15%) and rodents (12%)
  • Unsurprisingly, the most faithful pet owners were home to man’s best friend, with just 7% of all respondents owning a dog

Suspicious that your partner might be cheating? Forget checking their emails, tracing their footsteps or stalking their social media feeds, but do be wary if they own a cat.

That’s because cat owners are officially the most adulterous pet owners in the country.

IllicitEncounters.com, the UK’s leading dating website for married people and the leading authority on infidelity, found that over a quarter of 1,000 of its members own cats, making them by far the most adulterous pet owners.

The survey found that you’d also be inclined to be wary if your significant other owns a rabbit, with 17% of all respondents home to the pet perhaps best known for its virility.

15% owned reptiles, such as lizards and snakes, while as many as 12% owned a rodent of some kind, such as a hamster, gerbil or mouse; 9% of respondents are home to fish.

As for man’s best friend? Unsurprisingly, dog owners are officially the most faithful pet owners – just 7% of all respondents owned a dog.

Spokesperson for IllicitEncounters.com, Christian Grant, explains:

“It’s often been said that a person reflects the traits of their animal, so is it any surprise to see cats top the list?

“The jury has always been out on whether cats genuinely love their human companions, or whether their loyalty lies with whoever can best satisfy their stomachs.

“Simply put, cats will follow whoever can best satisfy their needs, no matter how long they’ve been with a particular human.

“It’s also no surprise to see rabbits, who have a pretty notorious reputation for their powers of reproduction, and reptiles such as snakes – not exactly known for their loyalty – closely follow cats.

“On the other hand, has there ever been any doubt about the loyalty of a dog?

“Their love is and always has been unconditional, and those qualities are often reflected in their owners. Simply put, if you want trust, love and a bond that’s almost unbreakable, marry a dog owner.”

Most Adulterous Pet Owners:

1. Cat (26%)

2. Rabbit (17%)

3. Reptile (15%)

4. Other/no pet (14%)

5. Rodent (12%)

6. Fish (9%)

Tall, Smart and Rich? You’re More Likely to Cheat

  • Tall, smart and rich men are more likely to cheat than anyone else
  • Meanwhile, women who describe themselves as lonely, virile and are housewives are more likely to cheat
  • The results show that men are driven to cheat because of lust, arrogance and their ego…
  • …while your typical women cheats because she’s being neglected by her significant other
  • The results come from lllicitEncounters.com, the UK’s leading dating website for married people and the leading authority on infidelity, who studied over 10,000 profiles to find out what common traits link to create the archetypal cheat.

Tall, smart and rich – if your husband is any of those, they’re more likely to be a cheat.

That’s according to IllicitEncounters.com, the UK’s leading dating website for married people and the leading authority on infidelity,

The site studied over 10,000 profiles to find out what common traits link to create the archetypal cheat.

The most common trait among cheating men was wealth, with references to being rich, wealthy or affluent appearing in a staggering 45% of all profiles.

This was followed by height. To be exact, 40% of all male profiles on the site were 6ft or taller.

Finally, intelligent men who were educated to at least a university degree level made up as much as 38% of all profiles on the site, indicating that smarter men are more likely to cheat.

For women, the most common trait was actually their job. As many as 30% of all women on IllicitEncounters.com describe themselves as lonely.

This was followed by the 27% of women who described themselves with terms such as ‘virile’ and finally, housewives, who make up 20% of all female profiles on the site – it’s the most popular female occupation to boot.

The site’s spokesperson, Christian Grant, explains:

“Our results show that men have a tough time suppressing their ego. Tall, affluent, smart – these men have it all… or at least, they think they can have it all. They want to have their cake and eat it too, and that includes having as many relationships as they see fit.

“Not to mention, as a smart, wealthy and tall man, you’re more likely to be attracting female attention, whether you like it or not, which only serves to fuel their ego and make them consider an affair as a plausible option.

“Women on the other hand, paint a different story altogether. Your typical cheating women isn’t driven by arrogance, ego or lust, but by a sense of loneliness, thanks to a lack of satisfaction in her marriage.

“This loneliness is further compounded for housewives, who potentially spend hours alone, only to further be neglected when their husbands come home.”
